"The Highland Lakes Master Gardener Association (HLMGA) has been active in Burnet County since 1998. Throughout the year, in cooperation with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, the HLMGA sponsors horticultural education programs throughout the adjacent counties. We also sponsor volunteer service projects in the Highland Lakes area. Some of the largest projects include the Burnet Farmers and Crafts Market, The Garden at Trinity Episcopal Church in Marble Falls, the Burnet Middle School Greenhouse Project, the Kings Garden in Kingsland, and the Hill Country Lawn and Garden Show, which will mark its 22nd year in 2022. In 2010, HLMGA members also helped bring back the Burnet County Area Fair, and they remain dedicated to the Fair’s growth and continued success.
Each spring, HLMGA offers a 40 hour educational program of lectures, workshops, and field trips for those interested in becoming a Certified Master Gardener. This rigorous program provides a comprehensive background in horticultural principles and practices with an emphasis on conservation and sustainability. Existing members re-certify every year by attending continuing education classes and logging volunteer hours through various projects and activities." The foundation of the association is its service to the community. Master Gardeners love to share the knowledge they’ve acquired, and they put it to practical use. Volunteer efforts include hands-on work, presentations, writing of articles and administrative work with others who also care about plants, water conservation, and protecting the environment.
HLMGA has more than 120 members and associate members, some of whom have been active in its work for almost two decades. While most of our members live in Burnet and Llano Counties, we also have members who live in surrounding counties. We come from 19 communities: Bertram, Buchanan Dam, Burnet, Cottonwood Shores, Fort Hood, Highland Haven, Horseshoe Bay, Johnson City, Kempner, Kingsland, Lago Vista, Lampasas, Leander, Lometa, Marble Falls, Meadowlakes, New Salem, Spicewood, and Sunrise Beach.
In 2021 we logged 7,322.5 Volunteer Service hours despite having so many projects and activities curtailed by the pandemic. These numbers amount to a tremendous contribution to the community. Using figures from the website www.Independent Sector.org, our organization, in 2021 alone, contributed more than $208,984.15 to our surrounding communities through our volunteer efforts. Our members also recorded 1192.75 hours of Advanced Training so we could improve our own skills and have even more handy advice to share with friends, family and our neighbors.
