The King's Garden

The King’s Garden is a Highland Lakes Master Gardeners' project.  Located in Kingsland TX, it is an approved project for MG volunteer hours.  It is a "share" garden sponsored by the First Baptist Church of Kingsland.  In a share garden, all of our produce is wheelbarrowed to the Share the Harvest Food Pantry.  On Thursdays, the Pantry will distribute our produce and other food to up to 150 or more families from the community.

The King’s Garden was established in 2014 on land that was donated by a church member.  The layout plan was made with attention to the details.  It is a securely fenced 100 X 110 ft. parcel.  There is a solid shed with a plethora of tools and spare parts.  It even has its own well for the irrigation system which primarily uses drip tape.  There are 63 beds that are about 30 inches wide with 18 inch aisles and about 30 ft (+ or -) long.  Each growing season, we usually try a couple different varieties of plants, methods of planting, weed control, using trellises etc.  Some are successful and repeated, others are not.
In October of 2019, after over a year of inactivity, two Master Gardeners started clearing the weeds and began making beds.  It was the belief that if it is built, volunteers will come.  Early in 2020, the HLMG Project Evaluation Team (PET) approved The King's Garden for support.

Our volunteer base consists of both members of the community and master gardeners.  So far, we have been blessed with enough volunteers to keep this project going.

The volunteers of The King's Garden would like to invite you to help with the usual tasks of having a garden.  If you have questions about gardening in the Highland Lakes, we will try our best to answer your questions.  You will be amazed during peak harvesting to see up to 450 pounds of  vegetables on the table, in wheelbarrows and buckets.   Help us make it to 4 tons of produce during a growing season.

Come by when you are able, the collective attitude toward our volunteers is:
"You are never late, never absent".
The King’s Garden is located on the grounds of the First Baptist Church, 3333 Route 1431, Kingsland, TX.    For information about volunteering, contact Hank Rominski, 860-575-8098, [email protected].
