Highland Lakes Master Gardener Association
Scholarship Program
The Highland Lakes Master Gardener Association (HLMGA) provides volunteer services to the local community which focuses on educating the public in advanced horticultural ideas and practices. In addition to the various educational projects in which the members participate, the Association offers scholarships to undergraduate students currently enrolled in a horticultural degree curriculum and graduating seniors from area High Schools who plan to pursue an undergraduate degree/technical certification in the agricultural or horticultural sciences.

(One of the objectives of the Highland Lakes Master Gardener Association is “To expand and aid the capabilities of the Texas A & M AgriLife Extension Service to disseminate horticultural information and practices”. The scholarship committee plays an important part by annually identifying and interviewing applicants who best can succeed within the horticultural and agricultural industries.
This year, two candidates shared great passion for their chosen fields and we chose to award each of them a scholarship for $1500 to be split between their two freshman semesters.
Natalie Dietrich (pictured below on the right) is pursuing a Bachelors degree in Agriculture Communications from Texas Tech University. Her great passion is photography with a goal of becoming a professional livestock photographer and working in agricultural marketing. Natalie was heavily involved in 4H and FFA before graduating from Burnet High School, even starting a photography business covering 2023 livestock shows. She is very motivated to succeed and I look forward to seeing her work in our community.
Blair Gilliland (pictured below on the left) is pursuing a Bachelors degree in Animal Science from Tarleton State University with the goal of becoming a Veterinarian. Blair has such a passion to begin her college studies that she is graduating from Burnet High School a year early. Growing up with cattle, horses, hogs, goats, rabbits and poultry gave Blair an up-close look at the impact a good vet can bring to a community. Blair is currently working at a local veterinarian office to help pay for her schooling. We are confident of her abilities and wish her the very best as she pursues her passion, caring for animals.
Many thanks to Joan Altobelli, Ray Buchanan, Lavona Fry and Susan Young for serving on this committee. What a fun thing to do…give money to deserving young people for their education!
